Quality of personnel training for nuclear industry discussed in Tomsk Polytechnic University

A roundtable “The use of nuclear research infrastructure for training Russian and international personnel” was held on September 6, 2022 in the Tomsk Polytechnic University (hereinafter referred to as TPU) in the framework of Days of Atomic Science and Technology to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the first research nuclear reactor startup. The event was devoted to improving the quality of specialists training for the Russian and foreign nuclear industries both in the field of energy use of nuclear radiation technologies and in the non-energy sector (nuclear, medicine, radioecology, agriculture, etc.).

The roundtable gathered the representatives of Rosatom State Corporation, the management of leading Russian universities (TPU, MSU), industry-specific organizations of the Rosatom State Corporation circuit, as well as representatives of nuclear industry organizations from Ghana, Nigeria, Indonesia and Kazakhstan, who discussed issues of interaction between universities and the nuclear industry in order to develop new educational programs, including in a network format, as well as new educational technologies in the field of nuclear science and technologies aimed at solving nuclear industry problems.

At the event, Julia Chernyakhovskaya, Deputy General Director for Nuclear Infrastructure of Rusatom Service JSC, made a report on “International experience in nuclear infrastructure personnel training: lessons learned and stories of success”.

Julia Chernyakhovskaya noted, that it is necessary to plan the development of human resources at the start of project implementation based on a comprehensive assessment of the national education system capabilities, requirements and schedule of the nuclear project implementation in order to minimize risks and improve the quality of training of experience of key nuclear infrastructure organizations to ensure that they fulfill their respective functions. Rusatom Service JSC has a vast in human resource audit, the required industry-specific resource base for organizing theoretical, practical training (including on-the-job one) of all categories of nuclear infrastructure personnel: operating personnel, emergency preparedness and response personnel, radiation safety personnel, etc. Since 2018, Rusatom Service JSC has been conducting on-the-job training for foreign students of Rosatom core universities to develop the skills of future nuclear specialists both in project management and in communication and self-presentation in order to increase the competitiveness of young nuclear specialists for employment in key nuclear organizations of the partner country.

The event showed the importance of improving the quality of personnel training for the nuclear industry as one of the integral elements of the nuclear infrastructure for each country implementing a nuclear energy program, because the highly qualified professionals are the key to the full-fledged and safe operation of the nuclear industry.
